What is UA & ST?

The hip-hop is an artistic young urban movement that appeared, at the beginning of the ‘80s, in the slums of large american cities. In the last few years, it has reached enough popularity between people from different age groups and socio-cultural levels, however it has not lost its popularity among youth people from the most disadvantaged areas and/or with less opportunities.

Young people who live in these areas can identify themselves with the elements of this urban art and artists. They look for hip-hop leaders as guides to escape from marginalization, violence, poverty where they were born and grew up.

Iniciativa Internacional Joven, an NGO that has been working over 10 years for personal and professional development of young people and professionals working with them, spent many years supporting a group of young people from Málaga, El Círculo Breaking, as we found hip-hop a great educational tool for social transformation.

Together we decided to organize, in collaboration with the European Union (through the Erasmus+ programme), the International Training Course “Urban Art & Social Transformation”, that takes place from 3rd to 10th of November 2014 in Málaga.
Participants are all professionals and young people which are part of urban/hip-hop art field from different countries (France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Brazil, Moldavia, Ecuador, etc.).

The main objectives of the course are:

• To know the different realities in which these young artists of the hip-hop live and work in their countries.
• To exchange experiences among hip-hop collective analyzing the difficulties and the support received by citizens and public and private institutions.
• To train young artists of the hip-hop, in order to professionalise their art form.
• Design activities where urban art becomes a tool for inclusion, citizen participation, social and educational transformation.
• Improve knowledge and consideration of other individuals and/or organizations on urban art and hip-hop culture.

To achieve these objectives we carry out different activities:

Work meetings: besides being a place to share experiences and knowledge among young artists from the same culture but living in different countries, we give them the opportunity to offer practical training to aquire basic skills as social educators and youth leaders able to produce social transformation from the urban art, as well as tools to professionalize this art, living this culture not only from the passion and hobby, but also developing it as a profession. During these activities we count on the participation of:
Antoni Gabarre (graffiti writing and muralist), Francisco Reyes (professor of the Complutense University of Madrid and director and producer of the RTVE programme “Ritmo Urbano”),  Little Pepe (MC, composer and musical producer, producer of Radio Onda Color, a social radio for public report and social actions), DJ Pera (Dj and musical producer, producer of Radio Onda Color), Lalone (graffiti writing and muralist), Edgar Weltens (MC, composer, musician/musical producer), Roborob (bboy, popper and locker), Ana Gómez (Asociación para la Dirección Responsable de las Organizaciones ADRO).
